What Is Bog Oak?

Bog Oak is ancient wood. Typically oak (Quercus robur) that has been preserved for thousands of years in the anaerobic, acidic conditions of peat bogs. The lack of oxygen prevents the wood from decaying, while the tannins in the peat slowly mineralize and transform the wood over millennia, turning it a deep, rich black or dark brown color.

• Most Bog Oak specimens date between 2,000 and 10,000+ years old, with some pieces from the Mesolithic era
• The wood is primarily found in Ireland, the UK, and parts of Northern Europe, where ancient forests were submerged by rising water tables after the last Ice Age
• The dark coloration is entirely natural, no staining or treatment just caused by iron compounds in the bog water reacting with the wood's tannins
• Bog Oak is exceptionally dense and hard after preservation, making it ideal for fine woodworking and artisan crafts
• It has been prized since antiquity ancient Celts and Vikings used bog wood for carvings, tools, and sacred objects
