MadHeaters Reload 3 User Guide

Jay VGoodiEZ

The MadHeaters Reload 3 is essentially a "Swiss Army Knife" for butane vaporizers like the Dynavap, Tempest, and Anvil. It is modular, so you can unscrew and rearrange the pots based on what you need for your session.

Here is how to use each of its integrated tools:

1. The Lid: Cooling & Decapping

The lid is the command center of the Reload.

  • Cooling Magnet: Place your hot vaporizer tip (Dynavap, Tempest, etc.) on the center magnet. This acts as a heatsink to speed up the cool-down click and keeps the device upright.
  • Decapper (side notches): On the side of the magnet, there are two notches. To remove a hot cap without touching it, slide the groove of your cap into the notch and pull the vaporizer upward. The cap stays securely on the magnet.
  • Tempest/Tornado Tool: On the underside of the lid, there is a specialized opening tool designed specifically for the Tempest V1/V2 and Tornado.

2. The Debowler & ABV Pot

Usually located in the top or middle section:

  • Emptying: Unscrew the top compartment to reveal a small spike (the debowler). Poke your spent herb (ABV) onto the spike to clear the chamber.
  • Storage: The spent material falls directly into the pot below the spike, keeping it separate from your fresh herb.
  • Tamper: The underside of the debowler tool (or the bottom of the pots) is flat and can be used to gently tamp down your fresh bowl for a more even roast.

3. The CCD (Screen) Inserter & Adjuster

This is one of the more hidden features, found within the internal threading:

  • Setting Bowl Size: It features an adjustable tool to help you set your Adjust-a-Bowl position (half-bowl vs. full-bowl).
  • CCD Flattener: If your mesh screen (CCD) is warped, you can use the Reload as a rolling pin on a flat surface to flatten it back out, or use the specialized CCD tool to press it back into its concave/flat shape.

4. Storage Pots (Modular)

  • Fresh Stash: Use the bottom or Mini Pot to store your ground material. To load, simply straw-load (inhale through the device) or press the tip directly into the herb in the pot.
  • Airtight Seal: Every connection point has a silicone O-ring. Ensure these stay clean and lightly lubricated for an airtight, smell-proof seal.

Tip: If you find the threads are getting crunchy from stray herb, use a small brush to clear the threads before screwing the sections back together. This prevents the aluminum from binding.

The Mad Heaters Reload 3 is a significant iterative upgrade over the Gen 2, specifically re-engineered to support the increased thermal mass and physical size of modern ball vapes and heavy-duty butane portables like the Tempest, Anvil, and HyperDyn.

Gen 3 Technical Specifications and Engineering Highlights

1. Physical Specifications

  • Material: CNC-machined Anodized Aluminum.
  • Dimensions: Approximately 97mm x 38mm (with all three pots).
  • Weight: 85g (full 3-pot assembly); 69g (without Mini Pot).
  • Modular Design: Threaded sections allow you to add or remove "Mini Pots" to customize the height and storage capacity.

2. Storage & Capacity

The Reload 3 utilizes a three-tier system, all featuring medical-grade silicone O-rings for an airtight, smell-proof seal:

  • Bottom Pot (Fresh): 28ml capacity (approx. 3g of ground material). Features a tamper integrated into the exterior base.
  • Mini Pot (Travel/Extra): 20ml capacity (approx. 2g). Ideal for a second strain.
  • ABV Pot (Used): 28ml capacity. Designed to house the debowler and collect vaped material.

3. Engineering & Tooling Innovations

The Reload 3 is essentially a "Swiss Army Knife" for butane-powered vaporizers.

THE LID: MULTIFUNCTIONAL HANDLING

  • Cooling Magnet: A neodymium magnet centered on the lid acts as a heat sink to accelerate the cool-down click for DynaVap or Tempest caps.
  • Modified Decapper: Unlike the Gen 2, the Gen 3 rail has been tweaked so the cap stays on the magnet and doesn't slide too deep into the rails. This prevents off-tolerance caps (like the Armored Cap or Hyper Cap) from getting stuck.
  • Tempest Opening Tool: The underside of the lid features a specialized hex/slotted interface specifically for adjusting the airflow or stripping down the Tempest V1/V2 and Tornado.

THE DEBOWLER AND MULTI-TOOL

  • Removable Debowler: A stainless steel spike for clearing bowls.
  • The Screwdriver Handle: The base of the debowler doubles as a small screwdriver designed precisely for the indicator screw on the Tempest, allowing for mid-session tuning.
  • CCD Inserter: The tool is engineered to help set the CCD (Circumferential Compression Disk) or screen. It includes a fixed half-bowl setting for DynaVap and an adjustable platform for the Tempest.

Key Engineering Upgrades (vs. Reload 2)

Feature Reload 2 Reload 3
Cap Compatibility Standard DynaVap Standard, Armored, Hyper, and Anvil.
Tempest Support Limited Native (Dedicated opening tool & CCD setting).
Decapper Rail Standard depth Anti-spill/Anti-jam geometry.
Modular Pots Fixed order Fully interchangeable and expandable.

Engineering Note: The Anti-Chazz Finish

While the exterior is sleek, the interior threads on the Reload 3 are often left with slight anodizing variances. This is an intentional engineering choice to ensure the threading remains smooth even if small amounts of sticky plant resin or dust get caught in the tracks, preventing the aluminum-on-aluminum seizing common in cheaper stash cans.

Pairing the Reload 3 with the Mad Heaters Tempest 2 represents a peak engineering ecosystem. While the Reload works with almost any portable, it was specifically redesigned to act as the primary maintenance and calibration station for the Tempest.

Thermal Management & The Cooling Magnet

  • The Heat Sink: The Reload 3 lid features a recessed neodymium magnet. Placing the Tempest 2 on this magnet doesn't just hold it upright; it acts as a thermal bridge, pulling heat away from the cap to reset the thermal discs faster.
  • Height Clearance: The Reload 3 is weighted to be bottom-heavy, ensuring that even with the relatively heavy Tempest 2 standing on the lid, the unit remains stable and won't tip over.

The Built-in Toolset for Tempest 2

  • Airflow Adjustment: If you flip the Reload lid over, you'll find a interface designed to grip the Tempest’s internal secondary cooling assembly. This allows you to tighten or loosen the airflow without needing a separate toolkit.
  • Visual Indicator Calibration: The Tempest 2 features a visual timing indicator (a small screw/pin that moves as it heats). The debowler tool inside the Reload 3 has a specific flat-head geometry at its base designed to fit this calibration screw perfectly.

CCD (Screen) Setting & Bowl Volume

  • The tool has a tiered stepped design. You can use it to push the screen into the Tempest tip to a precise depth, ensuring your bowl is consistently sized for either micro-dosing or full-convection beast mode hits.

The De-Capping Workflow

  • The Rail System: The Reload 3 lid has a specialized decapper notch. You slide the Tempest cap into the notch and lift. The engineering tweak in Gen 3 ensures that the Tempest’s wider diameter cap fits smoothly without scratching the finish or getting wedged.
  • Safe Storage: Once removed, the cap can sit in the Mini Pot to cool down safely while you use the debowler to clear the bowl into the ABV chamber.

SUGGESTED 3-POT CONFIGURASTION FOR TEMPEST 2 USERS

  1. Top: Lid with Magnet (for cooling and decapping).
  2. Upper Chamber: ABV Pot (with the debowler installed). You will be clearing large bowls frequently.
  3. Middle Chamber: Mini Pot (specifically for spare O-rings and the airflow tool).
  4. Bottom Chamber: Fresh Material Pot (filled with a coarse grind, which performs best with the Tempest's hybrid heating).

PRO-TIP: THE HOT SWAP

  • If you are doing back-to-back sessions, the Tempest 2 retains heat for a long time. Use the Reload 3's magnet to park the Tempest between hits. The thermal mass of the aluminum Reload acts as a massive radiator, protecting your tabletop and speeding up the time it takes to reach a handling temperature.
  • The transition from the Reload 2 to the Reload 3 (released late 2025) is primarily an optimization update. While the Reload 2 was a breakthrough in storage, the Reload 3 is specifically re-engineered to handle the larger hardware of the Tempest 2 and HyperDyn era.

KEY VISUAL MECHANICAL DIFFERENCES

1. The Quick-Thread System

The most noticeable tactile difference is the thread pitch. The Reload 3 uses a much coarser thread.

  • Reload 2: Requires multiple full rotations to open; can occasionally crunch if fine particles get in the threads.
  • Reload 3: Opens in about 1.5 turns. The coarser threads are much more forgiving of herb dust and are significantly harder to cross-thread.

2. Induction Sleeve & Key Tool

The underside of the Reload 3 lid now includes a dedicated key slot. This is specifically for the Tempest 2. It allows you to unscrew the internal ball-retainer or adjust the airflow sleeve without needing a separate tool. The Reload 2 lacked this integrated driver.

3. Decapper Rail Geometry

On the Reload 2, some off-tolerance caps (or very tight Armored Caps) could get stuck in the decapping rail. The Reload 3 rail has been slightly widened and the magnet positioned so the cap stays on the magnet rather than sliding deep into a rail.

4. The Mini Pot Evolution

While the Reload 2 had middle pots, the Reload 3 Mini Pot is slightly taller and has a refined Tamper on the bottom.

⚠️ Compatibility Note: Because of the new thread pitch, you cannot screw Reload 2 pots onto a Reload 3 body.

FAQ

Q. What has changed between the Reload 2 and the Reload 3?

A. The Reload 3 is not just a recolor; it’s a structural redesign:

  • Thread Pitch: The threads are now coarser. This makes opening and closing the pots much faster.
  • Decapper Versatility: The internal decapper (on the underside of the lid) has been widened and reshaped. It now natively fits the standard Dynavap cap, the Armored Cap, and the Vestratto Tornado/Anvil caps.
  • Modular Mini Pots: The Reload 3 introduces a smaller 20ml Mini Pot as an option.

Q. How do I use the built-in CCD Inserter and Tamper?

A. The Reload 3 is a multi-tool first and a storage jar second.

  • The Inserter: The bottom of the middle pot features a stepped design that acts as a CCD (screen) setter.
  • The Tamper: The flat base of the Mini Pot or the center of the debowler handle is perfectly sized to act as a tamper.

Q. Is the Reload 3 smell-proof and safe for travel?

A. Because the Reload 3 is designed for on-the-go use, its sealing capabilities are a top priority:

  • O-Ring Seals: Every compartment (Herb, ABV, and Lid) is equipped with a high-temperature resistant Silicone O-ring.
  • Magnet Strength: The lid magnet is high-grade Neodymium. It is strong enough to hold a fully loaded Tempest 2 or HyperDyn horizontally.

Maintenance: To keep it travel-ready, you should occasionally lubricate the O-rings with a tiny amount of beeswax or DynaWax.
